US septic system cost benchmark.
Eleven source-linked observations keep different septic jobs and system types separate. The table is a national planning reference; local soil evaluation, design and permits still control what can be installed.
Download the benchmark (.csv) ↓Not comparable with an engineered alternative system.
A broad combined replacement/installation observation.
Local evaluation rules and scope determine the actual fee.
How to use it
Compare like with like.
This table does not calculate an average by blending incompatible projects. It preserves the scope and pricing basis reported by each source so a reader can tell whether a number describes a complete project, a measured area, a service visit or one component.
Use the benchmark to set an initial planning range and identify questions. Then measure the real project, confirm local requirements and compare written quotes against one consistent scope.

| Category | Scope | Observed range | Basis | Context | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broad installation | Typical system installation | $3,593–$12,463 | per project | National observation spanning multiple capacities and system types. | Angi septic installation cost data2026 |
| System type | Conventional system | $3,000–$8,000 | per project | Gravity/conventional observation; site approval still required. | Angi septic installation cost data2026 |
| System type | Chamber system | $5,000–$12,000 | per project | Alternative distribution observation; not an automatic substitute for conventional design. | Angi septic installation cost data2026 |
| System type | Aerobic treatment system | $10,000–$20,000 | per project | Treatment equipment, controls and maintenance make this distinct from gravity systems. | Angi septic installation cost data2026 |
| System type | Mound or engineered system | $10,000–$20,000 | per project | Engineered site response; design and soil conditions control suitability. | Angi septic installation cost data2026 |
| Replacement | Tank-only replacement | $3,000–$9,500 | per project | Tank failure scope; does not imply the drain field is being replaced. | Angi septic repair cost data2026 |
| Replacement | Drain-field replacement | $3,000–$15,000 | per project | Mound fields are listed separately at a higher observed band. | HomeGuide drain-field replacement data2026 |
| Replacement | Tank and drain field | $4,500–$20,000 | per project | Combined replacement/installation observation; resolve abandonment and restoration separately. | HomeGuide drain-field replacement data2026 |
| Site evaluation | Professional perc test | $750–$1,900 | per evaluation | Professional soil-testing scope; local design rules override a national figure. | Angi perc-test cost data2026 |
| Maintenance | Routine pumping | $300–$700 | per service | Pump-out observation, not a repair or inspection allowance. | HomeGuide drain-field replacement data2026 |
| Investigation | Professional tank locating | $100–$900 | per service | Camera or detailed inspection may be priced separately. | Angi septic-tank locating dataAugust 2026 |
Method and limits
What this benchmark cannot tell you.
- These rows compile dated national market observations; they are not bids, local fee schedules or first-party completed-project data.
- System-type rows overlap with broad installation rows and must not be added together.
- A tank-only replacement, drain-field replacement, diagnosed repair and complete system replacement are different projects.
- The local authority, soil evaluation and qualified design determine allowable technology, capacity, setbacks and permit cost.
