System type is a design outcome, not a shopping filter

A conventional gravity system is often the simplest arrangement, while chamber products change trench construction, aerobic units add treatment and controls, and mound or other engineered systems respond to limiting site conditions.

Compare ownership cost as well as installation

A higher installation figure may include treatment equipment, pumps, panels, alarms, dosing components or imported material that a simpler design does not need. Those components can also create inspection, electricity, service and replacement obligations.

Ask each bidder to state the expected maintenance schedule, service agreement, component warranties, alarm response and access needed for future pumping or repair.

Keep two proposals technically comparable

Check that proposals use the same approved design flow, tank capacity, treatment standard and disposal-area basis. A lower quote is not comparable if it silently changes the field, omits controls or assumes a different permitting route.

Require a component schedule, design reference, permit responsibility, startup and inspection scope, restoration boundary and written exclusions before comparing totals.

Why does an aerobic septic system cost more?

Aerobic treatment adds mechanical treatment, electrical controls and ongoing service requirements compared with a simpler passive arrangement.

Is a chamber system the same as a conventional system?

Both may use subsurface soil treatment, but chamber products replace or change parts of the aggregate-and-pipe trench arrangement. The approved design and local rules control construction.

What makes a mound system different?

A mound raises the treatment and distribution area using specified fill and commonly uses pressure distribution. It is an engineered response to site limitations, not a cosmetic preference.
